Living in McCandless

McCandless is one of the largest communities in the North Hills, with 29,698 residents in the 2020 census across about 17 square miles. It operates under a home rule charter as the Town of McCandless. About 1,600 acres of North Park, Allegheny County's largest park, lie within its borders, and the township is part of the North Allegheny School District.

Getting around

McKnight Road is the main corridor south toward Ross Township and the city, and Route 19 runs along the western side toward Wexford and Cranberry. Interstate 279 is reachable to the south, and I-79 to the west.

Homes and neighborhoods

McCandless has a broad mix of housing: postwar and 1960s neighborhoods near McKnight Road and Route 19, larger homes from later decades, and townhome and condominium options. That range gives buyers access to North Allegheny schools at more price points than most of the district.

Parks and things to do

North Park offers North Park Lake, a paved loop of about 5 miles, trails, and the Latodami Nature Center. McCandless Crossing, a mixed use development completed in 2016, adds shopping and dining, and the Community College of Allegheny County has a campus in the township. La Roche University and UPMC Passavant are also located in McCandless.
